Kansas Morning
Under a crystal blue
Cathedral dome,
our tires crunch
a steady litany of praise
on this rain-fresh
gravel road.
Tall, finely seeded grasses
ripple whishing sighs
as we pass,
and a chorus of birds
warble their "Amens."
Now a sermon in patience
from an old mud turtle,
hooded country parson,
making his solemn way
across the road.
As we pause for him
to pass,
the fragrance of sun-warmed wheat
rises in the air,
smelling like new-baked bread -
feeding our souls -
on this Hallelujah day!
